🐄 CDE Spotlight: Livestock Evaluation
Livestock Evaluation trains the same judgment calls the entire livestock industry runs on, from selecting breeding stock to pricing animals at market. This CDE Spotlight introduces students to the event and gives them a simulated placing class before they ever step up to a rail.
Students will explore Livestock Evaluation through:
- What the contest involves, including eight to ten placing classes, oral reasons scored out of 50, and a written knowledge exam
- The four traits judges evaluate, including muscle, structure and soundness, capacity and volume, and finish on market animals
- The careers this feeds, from animal science and livestock production to ag business, plus the college judging teams and scholarships open to top competitors
- A worked example judging market hogs, plus a simulated placing class with replacement heifers and written reasons
- The junior division option, which skips oral reasons so younger members can start with placing classes and the knowledge exam
A great tie-in for: an introduction to contest season, an FFA Week activity, or a substitute lesson that still teaches something real. Students who would never sign up for a CDE cold will often try one after they've seen what it actually asks of them.

- Contest Overview: what the event is, who it is for, and the scholarships, college programs, and careers it feeds
- Contest Format: how the event is run, what each component involves, and how it is scored
- Background Knowledge and Vocabulary: the core content students need as a reference page, plus vocabulary terms with example sentences
- Practice with Answer Key: a worked example students attempt first, then check against a full key
- Simulated Contest: a scaled-down version of the event that doubles as the assessment
- Teacher Answer Keys: model answers, grading guidance, and a knowledge check key
