🚜 Ag Biography: John Deere
John Deere was the Vermont blacksmith whose invention of the self-scouring steel plow in 1837 opened millions of acres of prairie to large-scale farming. This biography introduces students to his life, work, and the company that grew from a single Illinois shop into the world's largest agricultural machinery manufacturer.
Students will explore John Deere through:
- His path from a Vermont blacksmith apprenticeship to a fresh start in the small Illinois settlement of Grand Detour
- How his 1837 self-scouring steel plow solved the problem of prairie soil sticking to cast iron blades
- Setbacks he faced along the way, including bankruptcy, factory fires, and disputes with business partners
- The values that guided his work, including persistence, integrity, and refusing to put his name on anything less than his best
- His lasting legacy through Deere & Company, now the largest agricultural machinery manufacturer in the world
