🐄 Ag Biography: Temple Grandin
Roughly half of the cattle processed in North America today move through facilities that Temple Grandin designed or inspired. This biography introduces students to the animal scientist, livestock facility designer, and author whose work reshaped how the meat industry handles cattle.
Students will explore Temple Grandin through:
- Her path from a childhood autism diagnosis in 1947 to earning a doctorate in animal science, sparked by watching cattle in a squeeze chute at her aunt's Arizona ranch
- Her design of curved cattle chutes and handling systems that work with animal movement and vision, reducing injury and stress
- The scoring and audit systems she developed for meatpacking plants, adopted by major companies like McDonald's in the late 1990s
