If you want to know what the judges will be telling their family tonight after they leave the CDE, it will be that story. It's not the best example of personal responsibility, but there is enough emotion in the short story to make your point very persuasive.

You'll find that the first minute of your speech just flew by and you'll have the judges ready to listen. Judges have about 20 items they must check off as you go through the speech and if you stay organized with your introductory paragraph not only have you made our job a whole lot easier, we can tell you are well prepared, organized, and a convincing speaker.

Extemporaneous speaking as one of the most challenging CDE's because of the unknown factor. The possible topics are so vast that competing in even local competitions that the experience can be paralyzing. While the general topics help, there is still a large area of specific issues that can be used in the actual event. As a judge of extemp on more than one occasion I'd like to offer some do's and dont's for speakers.
